Long-time listeners will know that I have posted before about this hard-rockin’ Australian duo (

here) and have been oh-so-patiently waiting for them make the 9000 mile trip to this side of the U.S. so I can see some Blood, Sweat, and Beers all up close and personal like.
The first band is scheduled to go on at around 8 p.m. Also playing is Mekango N.T., who I believe are from Florida. The show is 18-and-up and you can find
The Monterey Club at 2608 South Federal Highway (aka US 1). I’ll be the old guy near the bar looking like he’s one beer from having had one too many.

NiN|Ja2009 sampler
I was pleased to check my email this morning and see some info on the upcoming Nine Inch Nails/Janes Addiction tour (otherwise known as NiN|Ja2009). The North American tour starts May 8, just up the road from me in West Palm Beach.
What was especially cool about getting notice on this was a link to download a six-song EP with new – or new versions – of music from the bands. Along with stuff from NiN and Janes are a couple of songs from Tom Morello’s new band Street Sweeper, who is also on the tour.
And if all of
that isn’t enough to make you crazy, at the
NiN Website you can also get tour info, media from each band, streaming music, and new multi-tracks for you to create your own remixes.
This tour looks to be one of the tastiest of the summer, so if you get a chance, definitely get there. Word from last Thursday’s SXSW appearance was that Janes Addiction (with the full original line-up) killed. Here’re the scheduled dates:

This is Miami - Not So. Fla.
Sorry for the late notice, but I just found out about this yesterday: Churchill’s Pub, over in NE Miami, is putting on a hardcore fundraising event tomorrow (Friday) night.
Seven local punk/hardcore/thrash bands are scheduled to play to raise money for the opening of Goo, Miami’s new all ages venue.
Scheduled are Lowlife, Maldito, Homestretch, Maruta, Merkit, Consular, and Shitstorm. The first band takes the stage at about 8:30 p.m. Best of all, this night of sonic mayhem will set you back only $6.00.
Churchill’s is at 5501 NE 2 Ave.
Fittingly enough, tonight’s music is from a couple of the bands you’ll be able to see live tomorrow night. Definitely check this show out if you can.

“The Boxing Lesson are Narco-terrorists?”
A couple of days ago, I got an email that sounded too bizarre to be real. It was titled “The Boxing Lesson are Narco-terrorists? Free Jake Mitchell.”
Reading the message, I saw that Jake Mitchell, The Boxing Lessons’ drummer, is about to go to federal prison, charged under the Patriot Act for growing marijuana. He has apparently been branded a “narcoterrorist.”
“Narcoterrorist”? My understanding of narcoterrorism was that the term applied to drug traffickers influencing government policies through violence. The term seems also to have come into vogue lately to define groups who fund terrorism through sales of narcotics.
I don’t know the particulars of Jake Mitchell’s case, but a drummer for a rock band hardly seems like someone who would be funding the Taliban or trying to overthrow a government.
Here’s the post made on The Boxing Lesson’s MySpace blog, concerning the charges:
Jake Mitchell, the drummer for Austin's Boxing Lesson, was sentenced a couple of weeks ago to 60 months in federal prison on marijuana charges. What makes Mitchell's case particularly unsettling is that he was charged under the Patriot Act and has been branded a Narco-Terrorist. The band went public with the details today as Mitchell prepares to begin his sentence early next month, hoping to raise awareness of his case for the pending appeal and help support him and his family as they have lost everything. And the details only get more distressing.
According to the Boxing Lesson's publicist, Ryan Cano, Mitchell's wife is currently serving a six-month sentence as a conspirator for not turning her husband in. While Cano acknowledges that the operation Mitchell was running out of his house in 2006 was certainly much more elaborate than a simple case of his growing pot for personal use, the fact that he was charged, and sentenced, under Patriot Act laws that have essentially branded him a domestic terrorist seems particularly ludicrous and disheartening.

Again, I don’t know the specifics of Mitchell’s case, but on the surface, this seems utterly ridiculous and brought forth from a government strong-arming its citizens under the guise of patriotism. I can hardly believe the current administration would do something like that.
The Boxing Lesson is playing two shows in Austin, Texas, next week. Those will be Mitchell's last before he begins his sentence. They will be at Emo's August 27, and the Carousel Lounge on August 28. The band plans to continue with Kevin Sparks filling in on drums.

STP for my birthday
I’m going out this evening to see the newly – and somewhat surprisingly,
still - reunited Stone Temple Pilots. And on top of that today is my birthday (yes, I am officially a crusty old dude now) so the night holds some promise.
This will be my first time seeing STP. A friend saw them open for someone a long time ago and said they were great. Weiland was great as Velvet Revolver’s front man, so I expect STP to put on a good show as well. I’ve looked at the set lists for previous shows on this tour and they seem pretty consistent as far as what the band is playing: The expected mix of hits from their five studio albums. It looks like the band is allowing fans to pick the set list by registering on their
Web site. I didn’t want to register, so if they play stuff I don’t want to hear, I have no one but myself to blame.
To get in the right frame of mind, I decided I should post some STP today. I hit up my collection and pulled one song from each CD. It was hard not to pick familiar songs, especially from the first three albums; it seems like they all got a lot of airplay. I also dug around a little and came up with a couple of things maybe you haven’t heard before including a demo from Mighty Joe Young (the band’s pre-Stone Temple Pilots name) and a so-so quality live recording from earlier this year.

“Tremendo Dinero for Tremendo Negocio”
I thought I’d do something a little benevolent for tonight’s post. There’s a fund-raiser going on this Saturday night at Churchill’s Pub here in Miami (5501 NE 2nd Ave). Most fund-raisers, you may know, usually go to benefit some health-related research. Well, this one is a little different.
“Tremendo Dinero for Tremendo Negocio” is a fund-raiser for the thesis film “Tremendo Negocio.” I believe Abdel Fonseca, the film’s director, is the student in question. I further believe Fonseca is a student at Miami International University of Art and Design. The plot of “Tremendo Negocio” involves a group of South American felons who are involved in the human organ trade. The group forces an undocumented immigrant to participate in their illegal activities, which I guess leads the immigrant to make some decisions about his life.
Be that as it may, there are a few local bands and musicians who have agreed to donate their time and talents to benefit the cause. Because, as the ad copy says, “A film without funds is like a body without a heart.”
Scheduled to appear are Nimencia, Kosmic Lover, Melting Mandarin, Steph Taylor and The State Of, and DJ Abdel. If you’re in the South Florida area and want to hear some good music as well as help Abdel Fonseca get his degree, stop by Churchills. The show starts at 8 p.m. and the cover charge is $10.

The Rock - this Thursday
I was looking through some of my messages earlier tonight and saw that some northern rock bands are going to invade Miami this week.
Say When, a quintet out of Boston, and Plastiq Passion, from the New York / New Jersey area, are both scheduled to play Tobacco Road this Thursday night. So as not to alienate the locals, Super Sam will be representing the 305.
I can’t say much about Super Sam; they don’t have any music up on their MySpace and I’ve never seen them play live. I can, however, vouch for Plastiq Passion. These five ladies refer to themselves as “new wave,” and cite influences such as The Cure and Joy Division. In some situations that could mean an automatic turn of the dial, but maybe I’m getting soft. I gave a listen to the music they have streaming on their
MySpace and decided I liked it.
I’m old enough that when you say “new wave,” I think skinny ties and Flock of Seagulls. Plastiq Passion’s new wave seems a little newer, along the lines of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or the Strokes (also influences). All things considered, and since no one’s paying me to do PR, I can say that of the bands appearing Thursday, Plastiq Passion appeals the most to me. If I’m able to make it out to Tobacco Road, they’ll be the band I’m looking to hear.
“Plastiq Passion is an all-girl, new wave/rock band made up of members from the NYC/NJ areas,” C.W. Ross wrote in the Indie Music Stop. “These girls aren't just ‘eye candy;’ they kick ass with their music. This is an up and coming band that you should keep your eyes on.”

Get Sexf*ked
One thing about seeming unclosing bars is the tendency to stay long past the time you should. Friday night continues well into Saturday and that feeling Motorhead once described as the “wrong side of another day.” All of that results in the occasional Saturday being good for nothing much beyond laying on the couch watching Comedy Central and napping. Which is what happened yesterday, hence no post.
What I had intended to post is some stuff from local punk band Johnny Sexfuk and the Fleshrockets. Last year, the Fleshrockets provided background music for a Money Talks porn shoot. Beyond that, and a definite DIY attitude, all I really know about the band is what’s on their
MySpace: “They're a bunch of low life assholes with no respect for anything or anyone. They cannot be trusted. They'll drink all your beer, they'll smoke all your cigarettes, and they're always hanging out in the fucking parking lot. They can’t play surf worth a shit and they’ve even managed to make punk rock sound bad.”
What I like like like about the Fleshrockets is their sound. They’ve forgone the pop-punk formula so popular with the kids and radio programmers, instead going for the old-school sound that blurs the distinction between punk and garage, with the occasional slap of a surf bass thumping in the background.
I believe Johnny Sexfuk and the Fleshrockets are currently working on their debut release,
Onward and Up Yours!, which should be out this year. The band also has a couple of upcoming shows in the Miami area and one up the road in Jacksonville. I encourage you to check them out if you’re within driving or hitch-hiking distance of either city.

Miami "Live" - This Weekend
I thought it might be a good idea to post a couple of days ahead of time about upcoming shows here in the Miami area instead of waiting until the afternoon before. I don’t really know how that happened last week. Well, actually I do, but let’s not discuss that here.
There are a couple of notable rock shows happening in the 305 this weekend. Probably the biggest is
Cultura 2008. This happens at Tobacco Road (626 S. Miami Ave. / 305-374-1198) Friday night, with the first bands taking the stage at around 8 p.m. Roughly 30 very culturally diverse (that means expect anything and everything) bands and performers are scheduled to appear on Tobacco Road’s four stages. Performances are scheduled until 4 a.m., so that leaves plenty of time to get by and check out some local musicians if you happen to be in the local area. Saturday night, phoenix/NEBULIN is hosting/performing at the Wallflower Gallery (10 NE 3rd Street). This is an all ages show that starts at 10 p.m. phoenix/NEBULIN is an industrial rock band from Miami, who claims such influences as Garbage and Marilyn Manson.
Although the venue name sounds like an art gallery, the Wallflower Gallery “funktions as an artistic collective with the most diverse creative parameters of any organization in South Florida.” That means that in addition to art shows, the Wallflower Gallery also showcases spoken word performances, films, and a wide variety of musical performances. South Florida live
Later tonight, a few miles up the Florida Turnpike (Boca Raton, to be exact), a trio of South Florida bands is going to be tearing it up.
The Gist, Groove Factor, and Trip Aces are playing Murphy’s Downtown Pub (36 SE 3rd St., in Boca). Admission at the door is only five dollars. Hard to beat that.
Trip Aces is a quartet out of Jupiter, Fla. They describe their sound as similar to a Lamborghini Diablo, although I would say it’s a little rougher around the edges, which is a good thing.
Groove Factor, from the general South Florida area, is a funky rock band with a little ska flavor thrown in for good measure. They started out as a jam band hosting open mic nights and playing various venues up and down the state.
The Gist is a quartet from Pompano Beach, not too far up the road from here. They’ve also been playing various clubs and bars around the area.
None of these bands are signed; they’re just out there playing and having good time. This is the kind of show that is fun – three great sounding bands at an excellent price. If you’re going to be in the Boca area tonight (the show starts at 10 pm), I recommend you check this one out. It's more than worth the price of admission.

I recently had the honor of getting my little blog listed on the
South Florida Daily Blog blog roll. The South Florida Daily Blog is sort of to South Florida blogs what the
Hype Machine is to MP3 blogs: A gathering of related blogs in one user-friendly place.
I thought this was worth mentioning because I’ve been trying lately to give some attention to local bands and shows. Don’t misunderstand – I’m not about to start posting reggaeton and all that other crap I so dislike – but I have been making an effort to find local rock bands and do my little part in supporting the nearly-invisible Miami rock music scene.
All of which brings me to tonight’s post. Jimmie’s Chicken Shack is playing this Saturday night at Churchill’s Pub in Miami (5501 NE 2nd Ave / 305-757-1807). JCS is touring behind their January release,
Fail On Cue.
I don’t know what you might already know about Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, but briefly, they’re out of Annapolis, Md., where Jimi Haha and Jim McD started out as an acoustic duo. Their 1997 album,
Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope, featured the song “High,” which got a fair amount of MTV play.
One of the opening bands is C.H.A.L.K., a Miami-based hard rock band with influences ranging from Faith No More to Jane’s Addiction. David de la Fe (Freak), KaL MichaeL, Philip Chinea, and Sence Torres formed C.H.A.L.K. (Craving Himself Another Lovely Kill) in 1996. In 1997 the band went on a 10-year hiatus, reuniting last year for a show at Churchill’s, and have been together since.
Rounding out the bill are two other Miami rock bands, Alitheia and Revolution.
Tonight's music is a sample tune from C.H.A.L.K. and a few live songs from Jimmie's Chicken Shack. The JCS stuff comes from a Feb. 21, 2008, show at The Federal House in Annapolis.

Upcoming: Miami Metal Festival
Regular readers will know that I take any opportunity to kvetch about the seeming lack of rock music coming from this far point of Florida. In contrast to most things I complain about, though, I’ve actually taken steps to see if maybe I’m wrong, or if maybe I might need more facts before coming to this conclusion.
Turns out there is a rock scene of sorts here; I just haven’t been looking hard enough or in the right places. I managed to get on a couple of emailing lists recently and suddenly my inbox is full of events and shows that I otherwise probably wouldn’t have known a thing about.
This weekend, in case you haven’t heard, is the annual occurrence of “4/20,” which may or may not mean anything to you. Locally, it means the 420 Miami Metal Festival is happening, albeit on 4/18, because that’s a Friday.
There are about 20 Miami-area and Florida-based metal bands scheduled to perform this Friday at Churchill’s Pub (55 NE 2nd Ave in Miami). When I say “metal,” I mean friggin’
metal: Grindcore, black metal, thrash metal, whatever you want to call it, if you’re at this show, I’m pretty sure your face will melt.
The Notorious Nastie, one of South Florida’s most recognized and respected music figures, will host the festival, as he has for the last five years. For more information, either about this show or about South Florida rock music in general, check out
the Queen of the Scene. She is truly working to keep rock music alive in the Miami / South Florida area and welcomes feedback.
Tonight’s music comes from four of the bands scheduled to appear at the Miami Metal Fest. No bullshittin’ around – this is serious, hardcore metal. You won’t find hairspray, spandex, or pretty boys in this bunch.

Funeral for a Clown
While the rest of the world readies itself for SXSW, here in
la Habana del norte, we’re going to have a little festival fun of our own.
The Kryptonite Metal Rock Festival will happen this Friday, Feb. 29, at
Tobacco Road (626 S. Miami Ave., 305-374-1198). More than 30 bands are scheduled to appear on four stages in and around Miami’s oldest bar. The party starts at roughly 8:00 pm, so it’s going to happen quick and dirty. If you’re in this area, you won’t want to miss a rare heavy rock event.
A couple of the bands appearing are Boy Prostitute, about whom I blogged
last week, and recent additions to my ever-growing MySpace friends list, Funeral for a Clown.
FFAC is a quartet formed in Miami in 2005. They describe their sound as a “mixture of rock, electronic, and industrial elements (that) sounds aggressive, (but) produces an enjoyable dance beat that most listeners can enjoy.”
The band was in the process of recording its debut album when internal problems led to the dismissal of their original vocalist and their drummer. They quickly found replacements, but again had to fire their singer. Eventually, current vocalist Mike Debuc was brought on board, and the line-up seems complete. Debuc, bassist Noly, guitarist Alex, and drummer EleckttrusS are remixing and reworking the album, tentatively titled
Here Comes the Clown and plan to release it soon.

Based on the above responses to a Google search for information on Bruce Springsteen ticket sales, you would have plenty of reason to think I screwed up. Tickets for Springsteen’s April 2008 show in Ft. Lauderdale went on sale yesterday morning. I totally spaced it – I had some work stuff to do and completely forgot.
I woke up this morning and thought, “Oh shit!” I figured that outside of StubHub, there would be no way I’d get tickets. But, leave it to South Florida. I logged onto TicketMaster this morning and not only got tickets, but decent seats as well.
I don’t know whether to be disgusted at the people who didn’t buy tickets too fast for me to get mine, or to be happy they’re ignorant. In the end, I suppose it doesn’t matter.
Here’s some music from a 2002 show Bruce and the E Street Band did for MTV. Other than the fact this was recorded outside in New York City and it seemed to have been raining, I couldn’t find much information about the show. To the best of my knowledge, it was not released commercially.

A Redneck Weekend
It’s going to be a bit of a redneck weekend for me, as I go tonight to see Hank III, then tomorrow to a RibFest.
Hank Williams III is actually the middle act, between Nashville Pussy and headliners the Reverend Horton Heat. The Reverend I saw at a Warped Tour appearance about 10 years ago; Nashville Pussy I have never seen. I’ll admit also to not being real familiar with their music. So I tracked some down and I think I’m going to like them just fine.
I posted some
Assjack a whiles back and made mention to a
Hank III show that Chris at the Culture Bully attended. Not being the headliner, I’m not sure how many variations of his band III is bringing with him, but I’m looking forward to the uncertainty and potential for violence that always makes for a good rock show.
Now this
RibFest thing. You may not be aware of this, but Miami, as far south as it is geographically, is not
really the South. It’s more like North Cuba. As such, we don’t get much of the typical “Southern” stuff here: Country music, sweet tea, drawls, and good BBQ. It’s mainly the last part of that equation that leads me to RibFest. Sure, there’re corporate teams, like Tony Roma’s, but there’s also the down-home, sticky goodness of the independent BBQ artists. It’s the fun of gorging myself on ribs while searching for that perfect taste that makes all the cholesterol worthwhile. And country singer Phil Vassar will be there to serenade me and my Bud-swilling, BBQ sauce-smeared friends.

Upcoming Emily Easterly show
Just a quick post tonight so I can mention that I got a comment the other day from none other than Emily Easterly. If you recall, I posted about Ms. Easterly
not too long ago. She wanted to let me know she’ll be appearing Aug. 4 at
Churchill’s Pub here in Miami. If you’re in or around this area, you may want to check out her show.
She'll also be in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Aug. 1 and in Savannah, Ga., on Aug. 2. Emily's
