Untitled Zeppelin post (take 2)

Part 2 of my temporarily recurring feature here at the Licorice Pizza: The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Sessions disks.

Disk 2 features music from the Led Zeppelin III sessions, which took place between January and August 1970. Many of the songs on the album were conceived in mid-1970 at Bron-Yr-Aur, an 18th century cottage in Gwynedd, Wales. There, Plant and Page spent time writing and playing new music. This remote setting had no running water or electric power, which encouraged a slight change of direction for the band towards an emphasis on acoustic arrangements.

After preparing the material that would emerge on the album, Page and Plant were joined by John Bonham and John Paul Jones at Headley Grange, a run-down mansion in East Hampshire, to rehearse the songs. With its relaxed atmosphere and rural surroundings, Headley Grange proved to be the favored alternative to the discipline of a conventional studio.

*Some programming notes: The first 12 tracks – various takes of “Jennings Farm Blues” – would ultimately become “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp.” Most of these takes are electric instrumentals, as opposed to the acoustic version that would become the final version.
The “Feel So Bad” medley bears a lot of stylistic similarity to the III’s “Hats Off to (Roy) Harper.”
