Detailed Twang (blogroll addition)
Wow.
A week has slid by without a substantial post. Like I just disappeared off the face of the earth. Truth to tell I got busy with other stuff, as happens to the best of us, and things here kind of inadvertently got shifted to the back burner. And now I’m back with a post that doesn’t even involve anything new.
Over near the right side of this page you may or may not have noticed the blogroll. I used to note whenever I updated it, but the last few additions have been singular and were mainly link exchanges with someone. I try to make sure most of the links are active, but otherwise it just sits there as testimony to some of the other blogs I like.
However, I’m adding a blog today that I thought I should bring to your attention because I’m assuming that if you’re a regular reader here, you and I share similar tastes in music. A couple of weeks ago, when I first found the
Detailed Twang blog, I spent at least an hour reading the posts and listening to the music Jay had posted there. I don’t know the last time I spent an hour on any site, but the selection of music and the generally conversational style of writing just kept me browsing the archives. The only reason I pulled away was for dinner.
The music is a lot of obscure garage rock – bands like The Twilighters, The Bristols, and The Zip Code Rapists. There are also some things like Cramps demos and some old DMZ vinyl. If I recall correctly, Jay had some connection with the Bay Area music industry at some point in his life so he has that background to draw upon.

South Florida Music Calendar (new blog!)
I don't think there are a whole lot of people reading my little blog who live in the South Florida area. But for those faithful who do, I wanted to clue you in to a new blog I only just discovered this morning.
The SoFla Music Calendar blog is pretty self-explanatory: "A listing of local shows and live music events for Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and other areas of South Florida."
The blog creators are Fanless and Balou (I know nothing else about them) and they decided to create this blog because they thought it "would be pretty cool to find a simple list of local musical events – both big-name and local acts – all in one place online."
Fanless and Balou are actively soliciting show info from any and all bands playing locally. If you fit that category, click over to
SoFla Music Calendar and drop them a note. If you don't fit that category, well, mentally file this information away so that when you visit South Florida, you know where to go for your live show info.

"These are some friends of mine" (Blogroll update)
Since I’m trapped indoors by Tropical Storm Fay, this seems like a good opportunity to look through my blogroll, make sure everything’s current, and make updates as needed. There are also several sites I need to add because it’s been many, many months since the last update.
I’ve decided, too, to add a couple of new lists of sites I like and visit regularly, although they are not necessarily music-related. If you like ‘em, fine. If not, well, don’t click the links!
My first order of business is saying goodbye to a couple of sites I’ve had linked nearly since the beginning:
María Magnética changed her site a couple of times, from English to Spanish, and has apparently shut it down for good.
Small Things Stupid Packages has not updated in a couple of months, and only sporadically in the weeks preceding that. I enjoyed his site, so it is with regret I remove that link.
Finally, and very sadly, I am de-linking
Confessions of a Music Addict. Leah, the blog’s founder, moved to New York in June and no longer has the time to keep up her blog. I have long harbored a secret crush on the girls from Confessions of a Music Addict, so I was very sad to see them discontinue.

Now for the good news - some of the sites I’ve found and bookmarked over the last few months. So, in no particular order:
RockStar Journalist. “Music for short attention spans.” Recent posts include a video from The Pills, music from Jay Reatard, and some thoughts on the downsizing of
Rolling Stone magazine.
Killed By Death Records. “This is NOT a record label.” An awesome collection of old punk 45s. Recent posts include music from Sudden Fun and London Zoo.
Troubled Souls Unite. A blog with a large variety of musical tastes, something I always like. Recent posts include thoughts on Dave Mathew’s fans, and the art of the tailgate party. Both accompanied by appropriate music.
Battle of the Midwestern Housewives. “A blog about music and other stuff but mainly music. We like music.” MOAR punk rock blogs! Yes! Recent posts feature music from Adolf and the Piss Artists, and some classic, must-have demos from Fear.
I Correct Myself, I Mean All the Time. I Correct Myself is a pretty new blog; I think they started in July. A Tart and Puppet Show (the responsible parties at I Correct Myself) have come out of the gate very strong and I really enjoy the music and the writing. Recent posts include music from Elvis Costello, the Replacements, and the Dead Milkmen.

Blog Roll Update: Stand and Be Counted v3.0
I realized last night that it’s been almost six months since I’ve updated my blogroll. I know I picked up a few new friends during the heady days of being Digg’d and a Blogger “Blog of Note.” That said, I want to welcome the following blogs to the “Other Cool Sites” list:
Small Things Stupid Packages. I found this blog by following a link from another blog (the easiest way to find cool stuff). Brian earned my lasting loyalty with a three-part post from a 1999 Bruce Springsteen concert in Los Angeles. He also does not care that Bruce didn’t play anything from
Born in the U.S.A. at that show.
He’s A Whore. I think I used to have this blog bookmarked, but lost it somewhere along the way. I’m not sure what happened. I’m glad I found it again, though. Recent posts have included a Devo concert recording and a recap of the year 1984.
This Song Starts a Craze. Mike rolls out an “analysis of sound for the masses at large” as he gives his thoughts on all manner of music. Recent posts include reviews of albums as diverse as Radiohead’s
In Rainbows and
Nocturnal by death metal band The Black Dahlia Murder.
Wake Your Daughter Up, you may or may not recall, provided the source for the Zach DelaRocha post a couple of weeks ago. Travis posts hip-hop, which I will confess I don’t listen much to anymore. If you’re a fan of the genre, you will find some excellent stuff there, as well as links to many other similar sites. If not, check it anyway! That’s how I found the DelaRocha music.

Blogroll Update: Stand and Be Counted
It’s been a good few months since last I updated the blogroll (conveniently located to your right), so this seems as good a time as any to do so.
I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to do so, but I’ve finally added the blog often called “The Old Gray Lady” of MP3 blogs,
Pitchfork. I doubt there’s anyone one doesn’t already know about Pitchfork, but if not, you should. It’s a useful source for new music news.
It’s Hard to Find a Friend 
posts a good variety of music, something I always look for when I decide whether to bookmark a blog and return to it. Their latest post is a mix tape with artists ranging from The White Stripes to the Hotpipes and a side of Vampire Weekend.
I found
The College Crowd Digs Me when Casey left a comment on one of my posts. I usually will follow links until I get to the person’s blog. This has found me a couple of very interesting things, both musical and non-musical. I’ve also learned to start paying more attention to the hit reports so if someone links me I can return the favor. Anyway, Casey also has broad taste in music and I’ve enjoyed finding his blog. His latest post is an excerpt from an
interview he scored with John Prine.
I don’t remember how I got to
Aural Fitness, but I’m glad I did. I arrived late to the party and missed most of a musical tour of the 50 states (they just posted Virginia the other day). Something cool they do is a “Degrees of Separation” post, which is just like the “Six Degrees of Separation” game. Check out how they get
from Phil Collins to Townes Van Zandt in not six, but
three steps.
I want to make mention also of a blog my former brother-in-law recently kicked off. He’s not doing anything music-related at this point, but I said I’d mention it. He and his wife are on a road trip from the deserts of California to somewhere in Canada. Their stated purpose: “We have long wanted to see the natives of that region and observe their curious customs.” There’s also mention of a visit to some pot-growing regions, so the trip could grow very strange and terrible at any point. The trip blog is titled simply
Tripp. Homage to what a long, strange one it will be? Maybe.
