Picking Daisies

I think things have quieted down a little, so I want to get back to some music.

I got a disk the other day from a very pretty and talented lady named Shelly Bhushan. Shelly is a Texan (always a plus!), who moved to New York City in 2000 to pursue her musical dreams. She fronted a band called Live Honey for a couple of years, developing a strong fan base there. When the band split up, Shelly’s determination led to her decision to become a solo performer. She began writing her own songs, and in 2005, released The Shelly Show, a four-track EP.

Later this month Shelly’s full-length debut, Picking Daisies, will be released on Red Card Records. She gets a lot of comparisons to Joss Stone, but what I heard first was Amy Winehouse. It’s that sort of bluesy, soulful music. From her press release: “It’s a sweet mix of influences; you can hear the retro-funk of Stevie Wonder, the guilty pleasures of a pop riff, the grit of her Texas roots that make a sound all her own.”

Check these songs, and also check her MySpace space. She’s got some upcoming shows in the New York area if you’re out and around that part of the country, including a Sept. 20 CD release party at Don Hill’s. There are also a couple more songs you can sample there.

I like what I'm hearing, and certainly find her brand of soul preferable to Miss Overrated Drug-Addled Winehouse.
