Music with Bollocks
Alright – enough bullshittin’ around. How about I post some old-fashioned punk rock?I recently found an awesome blog called Nuzz Prowlin’ Wolf. The site, which is based in the UK, bills itself as a “Kombat Blog (Totally Random! Creative Chaos! .... is it art? music? Politics? or Yarbles!?).” It’s written by Nuzz Prowlin’ Wolf and is equal parts political manifesto and punk rock history lesson. Recent posts have included Nuzz’s thoughts on the hypocrisy of democracy as well as music from Nikki Sudden. The site is fascinating to read, even though, as a self-centered Yank, some of the political and local references are lost on me. But that’s all right.
I mention Nuzz Prowlin’ Wolf not only to let you know about another great place to explore music you maybe haven’t heard, but also as a way of letting you know where tonight’s post comes from.
A couple of months ago, Nuzz wrote about a UK punk band called Armies of Anger. He called the music “Punk Rawk as it should be played; for enjoyment and not some sort of career choice.” Nuzz then offered up a link to Armies of Anger’s MySpace, where the music was available for free download.
He wasn’t kidding about the music. This stuff is raw and energetic and filled with the sort of feeling that you would never find in so-called “commercial” music. Here’re the band’s thoughts on their song, “Diana is Dead”: “This isn't an anti-Diana song, we're just voicing our opinions on the media hype surrounding her death, the businesses who are making money off of her death, and certain newspapers who still put her on the front page week in week out. And above all who gives a fuck anymore, it's been 10 years and the story no longer has any possible interest anymore, and dragging it up time and time again will not bring her back!!!”
All three Armies of Anger releases (Armies of Anger, the “Diana is Dead” EP, and Maximum Rage on the Minimum Wage ) are available for free download from either the band’s MySpace, or at their Bebo.com page.
